[ARCHIVED] Fireworks Safety

Dangers of Fireworks: How to Stay Safe This Season
by Capt. Trey Foust- Loveland-Symmes Fire Department
Fireworks are a staple of many celebrations, but they can also be dangerous if not handled properly. Every year, thousands of people are injured by fireworks, and many fires are started as a result of fireworks misuse.
Fireworks can cause a variety of injuries, including:
Burns: The most common type of fireworks injury, burns can be severe and require extensive medical treatment.
Lacerations: Fireworks can explode unexpectedly, sending shrapnel flying and causing deep cuts.
Amputations: In severe cases, fireworks can cause the loss of fingers, hands, or even limbs.
Eye injuries: Fireworks can cause blindness or other permanent eye damage.
In addition to injuries, fireworks can also cause fires. Every year, fireworks are responsible for thousands of fires, including structure fires, vehicle fires, and wildfires. These fires can cause extensive damage and even death.
How to Stay Safe This Season
The best way to avoid fireworks-related injuries and fires is to attend public fireworks displays put on by trained professionals. If you do choose to use fireworks, follow these safety tips:
Never allow children to handle fireworks. Even sparklers, which are often considered harmless, can reach temperatures of 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and cause severe burns.
Only use fireworks outdoors in a clear, open area. Make sure there are no buildings, vehicles, or dry vegetation nearby that could catch fire.
Have a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby. This will allow you to quickly extinguish any fires that may start.
Never try to re-light a "dud" firework. If a firework does not go off, wait 20 minutes before approaching it. Then, soak it in water before discarding it.
Store fireworks in a cool, dry place. Keep them away from heat sources and open flames.
Never drink alcohol or use drugs while handling fireworks. Impaired judgment can lead to serious accidents.
Wear protective eyewear. This will help to protect your eyes from sparks and debris.
Please be courteous to pets and others who might be hypersensitive to fireworks.
By following these safety tips, you can help to ensure that you and your loved ones have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
