Township Offers Recycling Alternative

Symmes Township has taken a big step to help protect our environemnt--recycling! The Township participates in Rumpke's drop-off box recycling service. This allows you to collect acceptable recyclables at home and then deliver them to a drop box site free of charge. A drop-off box has been placed in the back of the Township's parking lot and at Hopewell Meadows Park for your convenience. The recyclable items do not have to be sorted making it extremely easy and convenient for you. Community members who do not subscribe to curbside reycling can stop by anytime 24/7 and place their recyclables in the bin.

Why recycle?

Recycling conserves energy - Using recycling materials as raw materials to make new products saves a significant amount of energy.

  • Recycled newspaper uses 40% less energy.
  • Recycled glass uses 40% less energy.
  • Recycled steel uses 60% less energy.
  • Recycled plastic uses 70% less energy.
  • Recycled aluminum uses 95% less energy.

Recycling saves natural resources - Using recycled materials means we can log fewer forests, mine fewer metals and drill for less oil.

  • Every tons of newspaper or mixed paper recycled saves the equivalent of 12 trees.
  • Every ton of office paper recycled saves the equivalent of 24 trees.
  • Every ton of steel recycled conserves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone.

Recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions - The national recycling rate of 30% reduces greenhouse gas emissions by as much as removing nearly 25 million cars from the road. In 2008, Hamilton County residents recycled 35,116 tons of material. The environmental benefits include:

  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 22,140 cars from the road.
  • Conserved enough energy to power 6,657 average homes for an entire year.
  • Saved 281,803 trees
